RYA Day Skipper Sailing Practical Course
This course
The RYA Day Skipper Sailing Practical Course is a five-day live-aboard programme designed for sailors with basic sailing experience who wish to become confident and competent skippers of a sailing yacht. The course develops practical skippering skills, seamanship and decision-making, enabling candidates to take charge of a yacht safely in familiar coastal waters during daylight hours.
Training is delivered aboard a modern cruising yacht by experienced RYA instructors, with an emphasis on practical sailing, navigation and real-life passage making. By the end of the course, successful candidates will have the confidence to skipper a yacht with family and friends in suitable weather conditions.

• International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS)
• Engine checks and basic maintenance
• Emergency procedures
• Man overboard recovery
• Victualling and passage preparation
• Night pilotage and night sailing
Required experience
Basic sailing ability. 5 days, 100 miles and 4 night hours onboard a sailing yacht. Navigation and theory knowledge to Day Skipper Shorebased level.

5 days, 3 weekends or 3 days plus 2 days

Preparation for sea, deck work, navigation, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, maintenance and repair work, engines, victualling, emergency situations, yacht handling under power, yacht handling under sail, passage making, night cruising
Certificate issuing criteria
Successful candidates receive the RYA Day Skipper Practical Certificate (Sail), demonstrating the competence to skipper a sailing yacht safely in familiar waters by day under suitable weather conditions. This qualification is the ideal stepping stone towards the RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Course and the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore Certificates of Competence.
