This course
The RYA Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore Theory course is an advanced shorebased qualification designed for experienced skippers wishing to undertake longer coastal and offshore passages by day and night. It builds upon the knowledge gained during the RYA Day Skipper Theory course and prepares candidates for the RYA Coastal Skipper Practical course and the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore Certificates of Competence.
This comprehensive course develops advanced navigation, pilotage, meteorology and passage planning skills, providing the theoretical knowledge required to plan and safely execute coastal and offshore passages with confidence.
Online Course – £340
Study at your own pace from anywhere in the world using the official RYA online learning programme. Full tutor support is provided by BH Marine Academy, allowing you to learn around your work and personal commitments.
Classroom Course – £895
Our classroom course is delivered over approximately 40 hours by experienced professional mariners and RYA instructors. Small class sizes provide plenty of one-to-one support, practical chartwork exercises and real-world examples drawn from extensive commercial and recreational boating experience.

• Safety equipment and emergency procedures
• Search and Rescue procedures

Knowledge to the level of Day Skipper Shorebased.

Position fixing, course shaping and plotting, tidal knowledge, use of almanacs and admiralty publications, electronic position finding equipment, taking and interpreting forecasts, plotting weather systems, weather predictions using a barometer.
Certificate issuing criteria
Successful candidates receive the RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased Course Certificate. This qualification provides the theoretical knowledge required before progressing to the RYA Coastal Skipper Practical course and forms the knowledge base for candidates preparing for the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore practical examinations.
