RYA ICC Assessment / Training

This course

The RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) is recognised throughout Europe and many other countries as evidence of your ability to operate a pleasure craft safely. Many overseas authorities require visiting skippers to hold an ICC when chartering or cruising, making it one of the most valuable qualifications for recreational boat owners.

If you already hold an eligible RYA qualification, you may be able to apply directly for an ICC through the RYA. If you do not have suitable evidence of competence, BH Marine Academy can provide the training and practical assessment required to demonstrate your ability and enable you to apply for your certificate.

Course topics include:
• Preparation of vessel and crew
• Pre-departure safety checks
• Close-quarters boat handling
• Marina manoeuvring
• Berthing and unberthing
• Picking up a mooring buoy
• Anchoring procedures
• Man overboard recovery
• Basic navigation and pilotage
• International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS)
• Safety equipment and emergency procedures
• Good seamanship
• Practical skippering skills
• Assessment to RYA ICC standards

Certificate issuing criteria

Successful candidates will receive the documentation required to apply for the RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC). The ICC is issued by the RYA following a successful application and verification of eligibility.

To apply for your first ICC you will normally require:
• A valid passport or national identity card showing your nationality.
• Proof of your habitual residential address.
• A recent passport-style photograph.
• Evidence of competence, either through an eligible RYA qualification or a successful ICC Assessment.

Applications are completed directly with the RYA, and successful applicants will receive their ICC by post at their registered residential address.
