RYA First Aid Course
This course
The RYA First Aid course is a one-day practical course designed specifically for anyone who spends time on the water. Unlike a standard workplace first aid course, this MCA-approved qualification focuses on the unique challenges of providing emergency medical care in the marine environment, where professional assistance may be some distance away.
This qualification satisfies the first aid requirements for candidates undertaking the RYA Coastal Skipper, Yachtmaster Coastal, Yachtmaster Offshore and Advanced Powerboat Certificates of Competence. It is also accepted for many commercial maritime roles.
Delivered by experienced instructors with practical maritime knowledge, the course combines hands-on training with realistic boating scenarios to ensure candidates develop the confidence to respond effectively in an emergency.
Course topics include:
• Priorities of first aid
• Primary and secondary casualty assessment
• Adult CPR, including drowning protocols
• Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
• Choking
• Severe bleeding and shock
• Recovery position in confined spaces
• Fractures, sprains and soft tissue injuries
• Head and spinal injuries
• Burns and scalds
• Cold shock and hypothermia
• Heat exhaustion and dehydration
• Seasickness and associated medical problems
• Medical emergencies afloat
• Medical assistance by VHF radio
• Helicopter evacuation procedures
• Casualty care while awaiting rescue

Content
The recovery position in a confined space, CPR, including the drowning protocol, cold shock and hypothermia fromimmersion and/or exposure, seasickness and dehydration, medical assistance or advice by VHF, helicopter rescue.
Certificate issuing criteria
Successful candidates receive the RYA First Aid Certificate, valid for three years. The certificate satisfies the first aid requirement for the RYA Coastal Skipper, Yachtmaster Coastal, Yachtmaster Offshore and Advanced Powerboat Certificates of Competence, together with many MCA commercial endorsements.
