This course
The RYA Day Skipper Theory course is the essential shorebased qualification for anyone wishing to skipper a motor or sailing yacht by day in familiar waters. Whether you are progressing towards the RYA Day Skipper Practical course or simply want to improve your navigational knowledge and confidence afloat, this comprehensive course provides the foundation for safe and enjoyable boating.
The course develops your understanding of coastal navigation, pilotage, meteorology and collision regulations, enabling you to plan and execute safe passages with confidence.
Online Course – £340
Study at your own pace from anywhere in the world using the official RYA online training programme. You will receive full tutor support from BH Marine Academy throughout your studies, allowing you to learn around your work and family commitments.
Classroom Course – £895
Our classroom course is delivered by highly experienced professional instructors with extensive commercial and recreational boating backgrounds. Small class sizes ensure plenty of individual tuition, practical examples and the opportunity to ask questions throughout the course.

Required experience
Basic boating experience is beneficial but not essential.
Minimum duration
• Online – Study at your own pace with tutor support.
• Classroom – Five consecutive days.
Minimum age
None (recommended 12 years and above)
Content
Preparation for sea, deck work, navigation, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, maintenance and repair work, engines, victualling, emergency situations, yacht handling under power, yacht handling under sail, passage making, night cruising
Certificate issuing criteria
On successful completion, candidates receive the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Course Certificate. This qualification is the recommended theory course before undertaking the RYA Day Skipper Practical course and provides an excellent foundation for further RYA training, including Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory.
