The RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory course is the highest level of RYA shorebased navigation training. Designed for experienced navigators preparing for ocean passages, the course develops the knowledge required to navigate safely beyond the range of electronic navigation systems using traditional celestial navigation techniques.
Students learn how to use a sextant to determine their position at sea, together with advanced worldwide meteorology, ocean passage planning and long-distance navigation. Successful completion of the theory course provides the knowledge required before progressing towards the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence.

Required experience
Suitable for experienced skippers and navigators planning offshore and ocean passages or working towards the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence.
Minimum duration
• Online – Study at your own pace with full tutor support.
• Classroom – Approximately 40 hours of tuition plus examination.

Content
Celestial navigation; the Earth and celestial sphere; sextant use and care; meridian altitudes; sun, moon, planet and star sights; time calculations; nautical almanac and sight reduction; worldwide meteorology; ocean currents; great-circle and rhumb-line sailing; ocean passage planning and long-distance voyage preparation.
Certificate issuing criteria
Successful candidates receive the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Shorebased Course Certificate. This qualification provides the theoretical knowledge required before progressing towards the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence, which also requires completion of an ocean qualifying passage and an oral assessment.
