RYA Powerboating Level 1 Course
This course
The RYA Powerboat Level 1 course is a one-day practical introduction to powerboating, designed for complete beginners with little or no previous experience. The course provides the foundation skills required to handle a small powerboat safely under supervision while introducing the essential principles of seamanship, safety and boat handling.
Training is conducted afloat on modern powerboats by experienced RYA instructors and can take place in either planing or displacement craft. The certificate issued will be endorsed with the type of boat used during training.
This course is ideal for anyone wishing to gain confidence before progressing to the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course or simply looking to experience powerboating for the first time.
Course topics include:
• Personal safety and safety equipment
• Preparation of boat and crew
• Pre-departure checks
• Launching and recovering a boat from a trailer (observation only for candidates aged 8–11)
• Basic boat handling
• Steering and engine control
• Slow speed manoeuvring
• Leaving and coming alongside
• Securing to a mooring buoy
• Basic seamanship
• Man overboard theory
• Care of equipment and the environment

8 years. Candidates under the age of 16 will receive an endorsed certificate.
Content
Launch and recovery (8-11 year olds to observe), preparation of boat and crew, boat handling, picking up and securing to a mooring buoy, leaving and coming alongside, man overboard (theory)
Certificate issuing criteria
Successful candidates receive the RYA Powerboat Level 1 Certificate, demonstrating the ability to operate a small powerboat safely under supervision. The qualification provides an excellent introduction before progressing to the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course.
