RYA Competent Crew
This course
The RYA Competent Crew course is a five-day practical sailing programme designed for complete beginners and those wishing to become confident and capable members of a yacht's crew. Whether you are new to sailing or looking to develop your practical seamanship, this course provides an excellent introduction to life aboard a cruising yacht.
During the course, you will gain hands-on experience in every aspect of yacht operation, learning to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout and assist with the day-to-day running of the vessel. Training is delivered aboard a modern sailing yacht by experienced RYA instructors in a friendly, supportive and practical environment.

Minimum duration
Five days. The course may also be delivered over three weekends or three days plus one weekend. Candidates who have completed the RYA Start Yachting Course may be able to complete the course in three or four days.

Content
Knowledge of sea terms and parts of a boat, her rigging and sails, sail handling, ropework, fire precautions and fighting, personal safety equipment, man overboard, emergency equipment, meteorology, seasickness, helmsmanship, general duties, manners
Certificate issuing criteria
Successful candidates receive the RYA Competent Crew Certificate, demonstrating the ability to act as an active and competent crew member aboard a cruising yacht. This qualification provides an excellent foundation before progressing to the RYA Day Skipper Theory and Practical courses.
