Independent Marine Surveyor Weymouth & Portland: A Buyer’s Guide
If you are buying a yacht or motor boat in Weymouth or Portland, the surveyor you appoint should represent your interests as the buyer. A pre-purchase survey is intended to give you an independent assessment of the vessel before you become committed to the purchase.
BH Marine provides independent marine surveys in Weymouth, Portland, Dorset and across the South Coast, as well as surveys elsewhere in the UK and Europe by arrangement.
Why choose your own independent surveyor?
A yacht broker has an important role in bringing buyer and seller together and managing the transaction. The marine surveyor has a different role. The surveyor is instructed by the person commissioning the survey and should report the vessel as found, whether the findings are good, bad or somewhere in between.
BH Marine has no financial interest in whether a particular sale completes. The purpose of the survey is to identify defects, assess condition, record limitations and provide clear recommendations so the buyer can decide how to proceed.
What should an independent pre-purchase survey cover?
Hull and underwater body where the vessel is lifted or ashore.
Keel, rudder, stern gear, propellers, shafts and underwater fittings where accessible.
Decks, superstructure, cockpit and accessible structural areas.
Internal structure including accessible bulkheads, bonding, bilges and high-load areas.
Machinery installations, fuel systems, cooling, exhaust and visible engineering components.
Electrical systems, batteries, charging and shore-power arrangements where accessible.
Navigation, safety and domestic equipment where safe and practical to test.
Moisture readings and percussion testing on GRP structures where appropriate.
Sea trial observations where a sea trial forms part of the agreed survey scope.
A thorough survey is there to protect the buyer
Finding defects is not a negative outcome from a survey. It is the reason the survey is commissioned. Some findings may be normal maintenance, others may justify further specialist investigation, repair before use, negotiation on price or reconsideration of the purchase.
A useful survey report should distinguish between the seriousness of different findings and explain what recommendation is appropriate for each one.
Buying through a yacht broker in Weymouth or Portland
If you have found a vessel through a local yacht brokerage, you are still free to choose the marine surveyor you want to appoint. You can ask the broker to arrange access, lifting and sea-trial logistics while appointing the surveyor directly yourself.
The important point is that the surveyor's duty is to the commissioning client. Buyers should feel comfortable asking how the surveyor works, what will be inspected, what is excluded and how defects and recommendations will be presented.
