Own-boat tuition allows training to be built around the yacht or motor boat you actually use. Rather than learning on an unfamiliar school vessel and then translating those skills later, the training takes place aboard your own boat, using its handling characteristics, equipment, controls and normal cruising area.

Why train on your own boat?
Every boat behaves differently. Propeller configuration, windage, rudder response, steering position, visibility and displacement all influence the way a vessel handles. Training on your own vessel allows the instructor to work with those characteristics and help you develop routines that are directly relevant to your day-to-day boating.
It is particularly useful for new owners, couples who want to operate the boat together, experienced skippers moving to a larger vessel, and owners preparing for longer coastal passages.
Own-boat tuition for motor cruisers
Motor-cruiser tuition can focus on close-quarters handling, twin-engine manoeuvring, stern-to and alongside berthing, use of bow and stern thrusters, pilotage, passage planning and crew communication. It can also be used to build confidence before or after an RYA motor-cruising course.
Own-boat tuition for sailing yachts
Sailing-yacht tuition can include marina manoeuvring under power, sail selection, reefing, tacking and gybing, sail trim, anchoring, pilotage, passage planning and practical skippering. Training can be adjusted to suit the experience of both skipper and crew.
Powerboat own-boat training
For powerboat owners, tuition can cover launching and recovery where relevant, low-speed manoeuvring, coming alongside, mooring, anchoring, high-speed handling, navigation and safety. Owners who also need an RYA qualification can discuss whether an RYA Powerboat Level 2 route is appropriate.

Own-boat tuition can be a useful part of Yachtmaster preparation where the vessel is suitable and the training objective is clear. It allows focused work on pilotage, boat handling, passage planning, skipper-level decision making and crew management before an examination.
