Marine Survey FAQ: Pre-Purchase, Insurance, Valuation and European Surveys

These are some of the questions clients most often ask before arranging a professional marine survey with BH Marine.

Where does BH Marine carry out marine surveys?

BH Marine carries out marine surveys across the South of the UK and throughout Europe, subject to vessel location, access, travel arrangements and the agreed survey scope.

What types of marine survey do you offer?

Survey work includes pre-purchase surveys, insurance and condition surveys, valuation surveys, damage inspections and other technical inspections agreed with the client.

Does a pre-purchase survey include the engine?

Accessible machinery and engineering installations are visually inspected and may be operated where the agreed survey conditions permit. A general marine survey is not a substitute for dismantling or a specialist engine survey, so further mechanical investigation may be recommended where appropriate.

Does the boat need to be lifted out?

For a comprehensive assessment of the underwater hull, appendages, stern gear or saildrive/outdrive components, a suitable haul-out is normally recommended. The exact requirement depends on vessel type and survey purpose.

Do you use a moisture meter?

Moisture-meter readings may be taken on suitable GRP structures where conditions permit. Readings are interpreted alongside visual inspection, percussion testing, coating condition, temperature and other relevant factors; they are not treated as a standalone diagnosis.

Can you provide a yacht valuation?

Yes. A valuation can be provided as a standalone service or as part of a wider survey where agreed. The opinion considers vessel identity, specification, age, observed condition and relevant market evidence.

How long does a marine survey take?

The time required depends on vessel length, complexity, construction, access, condition and survey scope. Larger or more complex vessels require proportionately more inspection and reporting time.

What do you need before quoting?

Please provide the make and model, year, length, construction material, current location, intended survey type and whether haul-out or sea trial attendance is required.

Will the report tell me how defects should be fixed?

Where a material defect or concern is identified, the report explains the observation and includes a recommendation for repair, replacement, specialist testing or further investigation as appropriate.

Can you survey a boat in Europe for a UK buyer?

Yes. BH Marine undertakes European survey work for clients buying or owning vessels abroad, subject to travel, marina access and local arrangements being agreed in advance.

Booking a survey

For a quotation, send the vessel details, location and the type of survey required. This allows the scope, travel and any haul-out or sea-trial arrangements to be agreed before attendance.
