This course
The RYA Day Skipper Motor Cruising Practical Course is a comprehensive four-day programme designed for aspiring skippers who wish to take command of a motor cruiser safely and confidently in familiar coastal waters by day. The course develops practical skippering skills, seamanship and decision-making, enabling candidates to plan and undertake short coastal passages under normal weather conditions.
Training is delivered aboard a well-equipped motor cruiser by experienced RYA instructors, with an emphasis on practical boat handling, navigation and real-life cruising scenarios. This course is equally suitable for new motor cruiser owners, those wishing to improve their confidence and anyone progressing towards more advanced RYA qualifications.

Certificate issuing criteria
Successful candidates receive the RYA Day Skipper Practical Certificate (Motor Cruising), demonstrating the competence to skipper a motor cruiser safely in familiar waters by day under suitable weather conditions. This qualification also provides an excellent foundation for progressing to the RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Course and Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore qualifications.
