RYA Powerboating Level 2 Course
This course
The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is the UK's most recognised powerboat qualification and is the standard entry-level certificate for anyone wishing to operate a powerboat safely and confidently. It provides the practical skills and background knowledge required to become a competent powerboat driver and forms the basis for obtaining the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).
Suitable for both recreational and commercial use, this two-day course is ideal for beginners and those wishing to improve their boat handling skills. Training may be conducted on inland or coastal waters using either planing or displacement craft, with the certificate endorsed to show the type of vessel used during training.
Course topics include:
• Preparation of boat and crew
• Personal safety and safety equipment
• Launching and recovering a powerboat
• Pre-departure checks
• Slow speed manoeuvring
• Close quarters boat handling
• High-speed and planing techniques (where appropriate)
• Coming alongside and departing pontoons
• Securing to a mooring buoy
• Anchoring procedures
• Man overboard recovery
• Introduction to the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS)
• Basic pilotage
• Basic navigation
• Emergency procedures
• Care and maintenance of the boat and engine
• Environmental awareness and good seamanship
Required experience
None. May be preceded by Level 1 Start Powerboating.

Two days
Minimum age
12 years. Candidates under the age of 16 will receive an endorsed certificate.

Launching and recovery, boat handling, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, man overboard
Certificate issuing criteria
Successful candidates receive the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate, demonstrating competence to operate a powerboat independently in suitable conditions, while recognising the limitations of both the skipper and the vessel. This qualification also forms the basis for applying for the RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC), where applicable.
