Powerboat Level 2: What Happens During the Two-Day Course?

RYA Powerboat Level 2 is one of the most widely recognised practical powerboat qualifications and provides the core skills needed to operate a small powerboat safely and confidently.

Day one

Training normally begins with preparation, safety equipment and basic boat handling before progressing to low-speed manoeuvring. Students practise leaving and coming alongside, turning in confined spaces, using springs and understanding how wind and tide affect the boat.

Building speed and confidence

Once the fundamentals are established, the course progresses to higher-speed handling where conditions permit. This includes the effect of trim, safe turns, lookout, crew positioning and maintaining control at planing speed.

Safety and seamanship

The course also covers man-overboard recovery, securing to a buoy, anchoring, basic navigation and the practical application of collision regulations. The emphasis is not simply on passing a course but on understanding why the boat behaves as it does.

Who is it for?

The course is suitable for newcomers and existing boat owners who want structured practical training. It is also commonly used as the practical basis for applying for an International Certificate of Competence where the relevant eligibility requirements are met.
